Watch the body and the nest
Carpenter bees often investigate exposed wood and use round holes. Social wasps may use paper nests, ground cavities or structural voids.
- Photograph from a safe distance
- Do not strike or block an entrance
- Keep children and pets away
When the nest is concealed
Activity entering a soffit or wall does not show the nest position. Blocking the entrance can redirect wasps into the building.
- Track the active opening
- Avoid opening the wall yourself
- Wait for activity to stop before sealing
Reduce future nesting sites
Maintenance after activity ends can make beams, fascia, soffits and gaps less attractive.
- Finish weathered wood
- Repair accessible exterior openings
- Inspect early each summer
