What blacklegged ticks look like
Adult females are about 3 to 5 millimetres with a dark shield and reddish-brown abdomen; males are smaller and uniformly dark. Nymphs are roughly the size of a poppy seed, which is why they are so often missed.
Where activity develops
They require humidity and cover, concentrating in leaf litter, tall grass, brush and the transition zone where mown lawn meets woodland. Hastings Prince Edward is an established risk area under Public Health Ontario mapping.
