Carpenter Ants in Ontario
Identify carpenter ants in Ontario, recognize nesting signs and learn why moisture and damaged wood matter.

What carpenter ants look like
Carpenter ants are among the larger ants commonly found around Ontario structures. Workers vary in size and are usually black or dark brown, with a smoothly rounded upper body profile.
Where activity develops
They excavate galleries in wood rather than eating it. Damp, softened or previously damaged wood around roofs, windows, decks and wall voids can provide favourable nesting conditions.
Signs worth documenting.
Large ants indoors, especially at night
Coarse sawdust-like frass below wood
Winged ants emerging from the structure
Make the property less favourable.
Prevention depends on correct identification and the conditions supporting activity. These steps are a practical starting point.
Identification before treatment
Similar-looking pests can require very different responses. Avoid applying a product until the pest, location and permitted label directions are clear.
