Carpet Beetles in Ontario
Carpet beetle identification, larval damage signs and prevention for Ontario homes and collections.

What carpet beetles look like
Adult carpet beetles are small rounded beetles, often patterned with dark, white or tan scales. The hairy larvae cause most damage to susceptible materials.
Where activity develops
Larvae may feed on wool, fur, feathers, hair, dead insects and other animal-based materials in closets, vents, storage and quiet edges.
Signs worth documenting.
Hairy larvae or shed skins
Irregular damage to natural-fibre items
Small adult beetles near windows
Make the property less favourable.
Prevention depends on correct identification and the conditions supporting activity. These steps are a practical starting point.
Identification before treatment
Similar-looking pests can require very different responses. Avoid applying a product until the pest, location and permitted label directions are clear.
