Fruit Flies in Ontario
Fruit fly identification and breeding-source prevention for kitchens, bars and food-service areas.

What fruit flies look like
Fruit flies are very small tan flies, often with noticeable red eyes. They hover around fermenting produce, beverage residue and wet organic material.
Where activity develops
Larvae develop in fermenting material such as overripe fruit, beverage spills, recycling residue and organic buildup in hidden wet areas.
Signs worth documenting.

Prevention depends on correct identification and the conditions supporting activity. These steps are a practical starting point.
Identification before treatment
Similar-looking pests can require very different responses. Avoid applying a product until the pest, location and permitted label directions are clear.
