Silverfish in Ontario
Identify silverfish in Ontario homes and understand their connection to humidity, storage and hidden harbourage.

What silverfish look like
Silverfish are wingless, silvery grey insects with a tapered body and three tail-like filaments. They move quickly and are often discovered when stored items are disturbed.
Where activity develops
They favour humid, protected areas such as basements, bathrooms, laundry rooms, libraries and storage spaces. Paper, adhesives and starchy materials can support activity.
Signs worth documenting.
Fast silver insects in sinks or storage
Irregular damage to paper or wallpaper
Activity in damp basement rooms
Make the property less favourable.
Prevention depends on correct identification and the conditions supporting activity. These steps are a practical starting point.
Identification before treatment
Similar-looking pests can require very different responses. Avoid applying a product until the pest, location and permitted label directions are clear.
