FAQ

Bed Bug Control questions

Answers to common questions we hear from homeowners, tenants and businesses.

Do bed bugs only live in mattresses?

No. They can harbour in frames, furniture, baseboards, cracks and other protected areas near where people rest.

Do bites prove that I have bed bugs?

No. Skin reactions can have many causes and different people react differently. Physical evidence such as live bugs, spotting, cast skins or eggs is more useful for confirmation.

Can bed bugs fly or jump?

Bed bugs do not fly or jump. They crawl and are commonly moved between locations on belongings, luggage, furniture and other items.

Can a very clean home get bed bugs?

Yes. Bed bugs are not a sign of poor housekeeping. They are usually introduced from another location and can establish in clean homes, hotels, apartments and workplaces.

Is one treatment always enough for bed bugs?

Not always. The treatment plan depends on the infestation level, preparation, access, property type and method used. Follow-up inspection or treatment may be recommended.

Do I need to throw away my mattress or furniture?

Not automatically. Many items can be inspected and included in a professional treatment plan. Discarding furniture without proper handling can also spread bed bugs to other areas.

Bed bugs can remain active in heated buildings during winter. Travel, visiting guests and moved belongings can introduce them, but a rash or a bite pattern alone cannot confirm the pest.

Confirm the evidence before moving belongings

Look for a live insect, cast skins, eggs or dark spotting around mattress seams, bed frames and nearby resting areas. Photograph or safely contain a specimen for identification. Avoid moving suspect furniture into another room or placing it in a shared hallway.

  • Record which room and item the evidence came from.
  • Tell us about affected sleeping or resting areas, not only the main bed.
  • In a rental, notify management promptly so inspection and access can be coordinated.

Treatment preparation and follow-up

The preparation list depends on the proposed method and property. Ask what needs laundering, containing, moving or leaving in place, and how children, pets and sensitive occupants should be accommodated. Follow the technician’s written directions and any product label re-entry requirements. Do not assume every service uses heat or that one visit is sufficient.

  • Get the treatment area, included visits and follow-up conditions in writing.
  • Discuss access to adjoining rooms or units where the evidence warrants it.
  • Report continuing evidence with dates rather than assuming all sightings mean failure.

Do you need to throw out the mattress?

Disposal is not automatically necessary. An inspection can help decide what can be treated or retained and whether an encasement is appropriate. Moving untreated items through a building can spread the problem. Ask for a handling plan before discarding furniture or bringing in replacements.

  • Do not apply pest products to skin or bedding unless that exact use is on the Canadian label.
  • Do not rely on leaving luggage outdoors in variable winter weather.
  • Tell the technician about previous products or treatment attempts.
